"Winter at the Lake" by Patti Deters. We had a heavy snow overnight which covered trees and fence posts with several inches of beautiful white snow. This pristine scene is at Simley Lake Pond in Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota. The weeping willow tree adds a bit of golden color to an otherwise mostly white terrain at this local park. If you like Mother Nature photography, please see more landscapes and other outdoor images at patti-deters.pixels.com.

Thank you for the votes of my "Sometimes You Just Have to Walk Away" by Patti Deters. Tan beige Sandpiper walking the beach in Manasota Beach, Florida. Made me feel a bit melancholy - indeed, "Sometimes you just have to walk away." I do like how it is walking in the surf. Photographed on a cloudy day. Thank you for the contest votes of my "Squirrel Balancing Act" by Patti Deters. This squirrel was balancing on a tree branch waiting for me to move out of the way, or perhaps it was hoping I would toss her some food! I like the red orange tones in the bushy tail and also how plumped up and fluffy she looks. This is an outdoor nature photograph with a vertical crop. ©patti-deters.pixels.com

Thank you for the votes of my "Camp St. Malo, Chapel on the Rock" by Patti Deters. From the Camp St. Malo website: St. Catherine of Siena Chapel, also referred to as the Chapel on the Rock, is located in Allenspark, Colorado. The Chapel was built in the 1930's and donated to the Archdiocese of Denver, at that time it was renamed Camp St. Malo. The facility was used as a boys’ camp led by priests and seminarians. In the 1970s, Camp St. Malo became coed when girls joined the camper ranks. In 1984, Camp St. Malo closed to evaluate the facilities and consider expanding ministry opportunities. The facility reopened in 1987 as the St. Malo Religious Retreat and Conference Center. In 1993, during his visit to Colorado for World Youth Day, Pope St. John Paul II prayed and blessed the Chapel. He also hiked along the trails on the St. Malo Camp property. Later the trail was renamed the John Paul II Trail. Boulder County designated the Chapel a historic site in 1999. In 2011, a fire destroyed the retreat center, since then Camp St. Malo has remained closed. In 2013, 100-year rains produced flooding and mudslides, destroyed the natural terrain and property, including the historic Pope John Paul II Trail. The Chapel remained undamaged, but due to the surrounding landscape damage, it sporadically has been open to the public. The Archdiocese of Denver recently announced plans to preserve the beauty and rich history of Chapel on the Rock, the Pope Saint John Paul II trail and a new visitor and heritage center. Please enjoy more of my (scenic, landscape, architecture and more!) images at patti-deters.pixels.com.

Thank you to those who voted for my "Misty Orange Sunrise on Boy Lake" by Patti Deters. A beautiful foggy orange sunrise on Boy Lake one morning in July. The mist was still floating along the top of the water and the only movement was the gentle swaying of the reeds from the water ripples made by a passing boat. The riverbank on the far shore is covered in trees and marsh reeds and makes a silhouette of the horizon. Northern Minnesota just doesn't get any better than this! The historic Glade Creek Grist Mill at Babcock State Park is a new mill that was completed in 1976. Fully operable, this mill depicts an old pioneer mill that was once located on Glade Creek. Thank you for the votes of my "Misty Fire Sunrise Geese at Whittlesey Preserve" by Patti Deters. This orange sky was one of the most intense colors I've ever seen in a cloudless sky. Whittlesey Creek National Wildlife Refuge is part of a large coastal wetland complex on the south shore of Lake Superior near Ashland, Wisconsin, located entirely within the Town of Barksdale, Bayfield County. An early morning drive along the shoreline often see fog and mist rolling in and over the marsh grasses from the Great Lake. The preserve is home to an abundance of birds and other wildlife, including this flock of geese we saw flying into the sun. This scenic panorama shows the trees and birds in silhouette. Thank you for the contest votes for "Kitty in a Box" by Patti Deters. This grey and black tabby cat crawled backwards into a long box and looks like she's in a tunnel of sorts. Her eyes are open wide and her perked ears are fully up indicating she is very interested in what's going on. The Feline Cat (Felis catus) is a mammal of the family Felidae family tree and comes from the Siberian tiger (Felis tigris altaica). The "tabby" is a description of the fur pattern and comes from African Wildcat lineage. She is a domestic pet and a housecat of mixed breed, probably including Domestic Shorthair. Her name is Zelda and she much loved. Several textures and overlays have been added to the square background for a mystic artistic effect. Thank you for the votes of my "Red Frosty Autumn Leaf - Vertical" by Patti Deters. This close-up of a red autumn leaf shows the beautiful and delicate hoar frost that has crystalized on each and every vein and crevice. Hoarfrost can occur on cold, still nights when water vapor in the air creates ice crystals on vegetation that are cooler than the air. Not just a winter phenomenon, it can happen in late autumn or very early spring if weather conditions are right. Thank you for the contest votes of my "Pyrrhuloxia (Desert Cardinal) Portrait" by Patti Deters. These striking songbirds are residents of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and Mexico and are found in hot deserts, dense brush, thorny thickets, and mesquite groves. Pyrrhuloxias (cardinalis sinuatis) are omnivores, eating insects, seeds, and berries; they rarely drink water as it is so scarce in their desert habitat. Instead, they get moisture from juicy eating insects. Pyrrhuloxia look a bit like their cousin, the northern Cardinal; males are grey with lots of red coloring on the tall crest, face, breast, and tail. The bill or beak is golden yellow and thick and somewhat rounded. This particular male bird was photographed in southern Arizona and was very skittish, not staying perched on any one branch for very long. If you like outdoor nature photography, please enjoy more birds and other wildlife images at patti-deters.pixels.com.

Thank you for the votes for my "Egret Chick in Nest with Parent BW" by Patti Deters. A juvenile Great White Egret (Ardea alba) is safe in her nest and protected by her adult parent. Egrets are long-legged water birds, and are members of the heron family. This young bird is the only one in her nest – most clutches have 3-4 eggs, but not al always hatch or survive. The parent egret is actually preening her feathers, but the overhead wing makes it appear as if she is protecting her baby juvenile from, perhaps, the sun or overhead prey. This photograph has been rendered as black and white (bw) for artistic effect.
